Os filmes são dos produtos mais exportados pelos EUA e a indústria cinematográfica é uma das que gera mais receitas a nível mundial. Mas apesar do crescimento ano após ano, apenas seis dos milhares de filmes produzidos nos últimos 15 anos figuram na listagem.
“Os estúdios de cinema já não fazem filmes revolucionários”, afirmou o crítico Noah Gittel, em entrevista à BBC, acrescentando que “ainda existem filmes revolucionários mas são filmes independentes. E ainda que os críticos possam ser unânimes no elogio a alguns deles, o seu impacto na sociedade não está ao nível do impacto dos filmes mais antigos”.
A lista é encabeçada pelo filme “Mundo a seus Pés”, de Orson Welles, de 1941, algo que não espantou os apreciadores de cinema. Em segundo lugar ficou o filme mais recente que figura no top 10, “O Padrinho”, de 1972, e em terceiro lugar a obra “Vertigo”, de 1958, realizado por Alfred Hitchcock.
Já fora do pódio, o filme “2001: Odisseia no Espaço”, de 1968, alcançou o quarto lugar, seguido de “A Desaparecida”, que estreou em 1956.
O melhor classificado dos filmes selecionados do século XXI foi “A Cidade dos Sonhos” (2001), na 21ª posição. “A Árvore da Vida”, o filme de 2011 protagonizado por Brad Pitt, encontra-se no 79º lugar. Para além destes, “O Despertar da Mente”, de 2004, “Batman: O Cavaleiro das Trevas”, de 2008, e “12 Anos de Escravo”, de 2013, mereceram também um lugar na lista, perto das últimas posições.
Christian Blauvelt, editor-adjunto da BBC, acredita que o segredo para estar nas posições cimeiras da lista é a passagem do tempo, que “santifica” as obras cinematográficas. Um filme só se torna um clássico alguns anos, por vezes décadas, depois de ter sido lançado.
